Step one. Check the storefront for a posted NYS OCM license number. Licensed dispensaries post the license on the storefront window, on the website footer, and on every receipt. Unlicensed shops do not. The license number format is a serial string issued by the Office of Cannabis Management. If you cannot find a number posted in plain view, walk back out.

Step two. Cross-check the shop name and address against the OCM public licensee list at cannabis.ny.gov. The list shows every active adult-use retail license in New York State by trade name, legal entity, and registered street address. The Alchemy's two locations appear on that list under our registered legal entity. So does every other licensed retailer in Manhattan. The unlicensed shops do not appear.

Step three. Confirm the packaging meets OCM Part 113 standards. Licensed product ships in child-resistant opaque packaging with NYS cannabinoid labeling, manufacturer information, batch number, and a QR code linking to the Certificate of Analysis. Loose flower in branded plastic bags, cartridges sold in printed paper sleeves, or edibles in non-childproof candy wrappers are all signs of unlicensed origin. If the packaging does not meet the OCM standard, the product is not state-tested.

The three-step audit takes about two minutes per shop, runs the same way for any New York dispensary, and is the cleanest defense against buying contaminated or mislabeled product. We say this directly because the cost of getting it wrong is real: unlicensed cartridges have been linked to vitamin E acetate adulteration, heavy metal contamination, and pesticide residue at levels that the NYS testing protocol explicitly screens out.

The visitor mix at the Empire State Building skews heavily toward out-of-state and international tourists, with a meaningful slice of NYC metro-area residents bringing visiting family or friends.
